House panel begins medical college fee probe

Kathmandu, April 11

A subcommittee under the Education and Health Committee of Parliament has started its investigation into reports that some medical colleges charged excessive fees from the students illegally.

A team of Nepal Medical Council had reportedly found that Gandaki Medical College Teaching Hospital and Research Centre, Pokhara, has been charging MBBS students extra fees.

The nine member subcommittee led by lawmaker Suresh Kumar Rai has asked the students, parents or anyone who has been charged extra or cheated by colleges to send the grievances within 15 days.

The subcommittee has also asked the institutions to explain why the fees were charged and has also sought necessary documents to justify their claims.

In a previous meeting of the Education and Health Committee, Education Ministry joint secretary Dr Hari Lamsal had informed that KIST Medical College had shown a lot of carelessness while conducting exams.

The government has set a limit of charging students Rs 3.8 million fee to study MBBS. But private colleges like KIST and Gandaki Medical College have been charging its students up to Rs 6 million.

The subcommittee has said it will need at least a month to study the case, after which it will submit its report.
