Supreme Court justice dragged into controversy after he hears case involving former client

Kathmandu, June 6

Supreme Court justice Prakash Man Singh Raut has been dragged into a controversy after he heard a case involving his former client.

Before joining the judgeship, Raut had worked for Nepal Red Cross Society for many years as its legal consultant. He had pleaded for the organisation multiple times.

Now, Raut recently issued an interim order in a case filed by the organisation’s chairman Sanjeev Thapa, in his favour.

The Kathmandu District Administration Office had recently removed Thapa from the position accusing him of corruption and formed an ad hoc committee led by Bishweshwar Maskey on May 20.

But, Thapa had moved the apex court challenging the DAO decision.

After Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana assigned Raut to hear the case, an advocate submitted an application, arguing he should not conduct the hearing on the moral basis. The applicant also claimed Raut and Thapa are relatives.

However, the court did not heed the application and conducted the hearing on Tuesday.

Raut’s bench issued the interim order, telling the DAO not to bar Karki and his committee to perform duties till the next order.

Sources at the apex court say that Chief Justice Rana has been informed about the issue.
