‘Wide-body aircraft acquired without preparations’

Kathmandu, June 7

A sub-committee of the International Relations and Labour Committee of the Parliament, which was formed to probe possible anomalies in the procurement process of two Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft by Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), today submitted its report at the full committee stating that decisions to procure these aircraft were made without any study and groundwork by different government agencies, including Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and NAC.

The probe report prepared by lawmaker Deepak Prasad Bhatta has not identified any guilty individuals in the entire procurement process but has stated that the entire process had numerous anomalies and immature decisions.

The sub-committee has also highlighted the need to conduct a further probe into this issue by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) and take necessary action.

Prior to this, a probe carried out by the Public Accounts Committee of the Legislature-Parliament had concluded that the wide-body procurement process had entertained irregularities worth billions of rupees and identified late tourism minister Rabindra Adhikari, former managing director of NAC Sugat Ratna Kansakar and other high-level NAC officials guilty in the procurement process.
