Medical firms okayed for health check-up of Malaysia-bound Nepalis require authentication

Kathmandu, July 7

Though the government has finalised 99 health check-up centres for migrants going to Malaysia, these centres will have to receive authentication from the Malaysian government before being able to commence their service.

As per officials at the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security (MoLESS), these medical firms will have to wait for official authorisation from the Malaysian government before they can start different biometric works targeting Malaysia-bound Nepali workers.

The government recently finalised the list of 99 health check-up institutions on the basis of the Malaysian government’s new health standard guideline that clarifies the medical requirements for migrant workers. “The Malaysian government is expected to soon authenticate the selected firms which will help to resume the flow of Nepali migrant workers to Malaysia,” informed Narayan Regmi, spokesperson for MoLESS.

The government cracked down on Immigration Security Clearance and One Stop Centre that had been levying additional charges on Nepali migrants for obtaining health certificates. Subsequently, the government had stopped sending workers from going to the Southeast Asian destination from May last year. Ever since, the outflow of Nepali workers to Malaysia has been halted completely.

A memorandum of understanding on the bilateral labour pact between Nepal government and Malaysian government was signed in October last year.

However, the process to send workers to Malaysia has not resumed yet.

However, Regmi said that the technical committee meeting between the two governments within this month will sort out various issues hindering the resumption of supply of labour force from Nepal to the Southeast Asian nation. Similarly, he also said that the Malaysian government will soon authenticate the 99 health check-up institutions finalised by the government to conduct biometric works.
